World Nutella Day is an annual celebration of the chocolate hazelnut spread Nutella. It is celebrated on February 5th, with events taking place around the world.
World Nutella Day originated in 2007 when Sara Rosso, an American living in Italy, created the food blog MsAdventuresInItaly.com to share her favorite recipes and tips for using Nutella with her readership.
If you're wondering why someone would be so dedicated to a brand of chocolate hazelnut spread that they would create an entire holiday around it, the answer is simple: Sara Rosso loves Nutella. The founder of World Nutella Day is passionate about her favorite food and wanted to celebrate its tastiness with other Nutella fans around the world. She began the holiday to bring together people who share her love of all things Nutella, and it has since gained popularity in the United States and beyond.
History of Nutella
In 1946, Mr. Pietro Ferrero founded his company and began to produce the first product in a line that would later include Nutella. Called a "Gianduja" which is a homogenous blend of chocolate with 30% hazelnut paste. It was originally sold as a solid block and was meant to be sliced and served on bread.
In 1951, they changed the solid block to a spreadable, paste-like texture and named it "Supercrema". In 1964, Ferrero's son, Michele innovated the existing product into a hazelnut-cocoa cream and dubbed it "Nutella".
Moving forward, Ferrero worked on modifying and rebranding the product leading to the iconic jar which is globally recognizable until this very day.
